That is cool! – Abe

“We hear that you will not abide the election of a Republican president! In that event, you say you will destroy the Union; and then, you say, the great crime of having destroyed it will be upon us! That is cool. A highwayman holds a pistol to my ear, and mutters through his teeth, ‘Stand and deliver, or I shall kill you and then you will be a murderer!”

Underground Railroad Tour this Saturday!

We just got word that there will be an engaging and educational (engagucational?) tour of the parts of the Underground railroad in Peekskill:

A guided tour to the various sites that runaway slaves hid and found refuge in Peekskill. Re-enactors will bring to life the African-American slave struggle to be free and the important role Peekskill played in their quest for freedom. Visit the different sections of the Underground railroad, including the home of Henry Ward Beecher, a Preacher and Abolitionist, who had his summer home in Peekskill in which he constructed a tunnel to harbor and hide runaway slaves.

The cost is $20/person and reservations are highly recommended. You can do so by calling LaFern Joseph at 914-382-9226. (LaFern is the proprietor of the wonderful Fern Tree in downtown Peekskill.)

The tour begins at 1pm at the Lincoln Train Station and will go to 3pm or so. Sneakers and long pants are suggested as you will be walking in the woods.

A bit of Peekskill’s Revolutionary War History

Another installment of our semi-non-regular history lessons for Peekskill.

Found this nice write up on the battle of Fort Hill and the preservation efforts for the historic site on the Peekskill NY in Pictures Facebook page.

Peekskill Summer Activities

Peekskill is a friendly town, and there’s lots to do if you’re looking for summer activities. Here are a few we think are worth a mention:

  • Hike or bike the Blue Mountain Reservation
This 1,538-acre park right in Peekskill proper features miles of trails for mountain biking, strolling and nature study, and offers challenging hikes to the tops of two large peaks, Mt. Spitzenberg and Blue Mountain.

  • Take in a summer show or just chill by the water at Riverfront Green Park.  A great place to river watch, check out some cool sculptures, enjoy a picnic or bring the kids to the playground. There are nearby restaurants, bars, delis and an ice cream shop, so you don’t have to trek back to town.
  • Enjoy Peekskill and the Hudson Valley by getting out on the water for a relaxing cruise.
trinity_1Trinity Cruise Company offers cruises from Peekskill’s Riverfront Green Park through the Hudson Highlands.  Check their calendar for their regular schedule and special events such as the monthly Wine Tasting Cruise with Dylan’s Wine Cellar and the Brews & Blues Cruise with Peekskill Brewery growlers.
  • Stop by to watch an evening basketball game or enjoy the spray pool on a hot summer day. Main St. Peekskill.
  • Take a tour of Peekskill points of interest on “Stella” the Peekskill Trolly.
